Daytrip to Port Townsend

Daytrip to Port Townsend

Mackenzie Miller and Violet Portteus

Port Townsend is a historical gem only an hour or so away from Gig Harbor. With an abundance of small shops and delicious restaurants, it is a perfect destination for any weekend adventurer. To kick off our Saturday, we drove up to Port Townsend. Our first stop was Nifty Fiftys Soda Fountain, a charming fifties themed dinner with burgers, seafood, and shakes. The food was reasonably priced and tasty. The servers were kind and continued to check up on us as well as other tables. Our next stop was Magpie Alley Antiques and Oddities. The unique shop had a variety of gifts for sale, including an abundance of records, vintage clothes, and little trinkets. It was exciting to browse and see all the vintage items. After exploring the antique shop we headed over to Derr Jewelry, a jewelry shop with many kinds of jewelry products, including affordable low price earrings, rings and necklaces. After purchasing one of a kind jewelry pieces, we headed over to 1851. 1851 carried stickers, clothing, jewelry and more. We only stayed in the town for a few hours, so we weren’t able to visit the ocean, but we recommend going to the docks by the beach because it is a great view. This trip could be a one day trip or you could turn it into a weekend trip and stay at one of the various hotels in the city.

There are many activities you could add to your Port Townsend excursion. A beautiful destination right outside the downtown area of Port Townsend is Fort Worden State Park. It is full of nature, music, art, and food. Among other things, Fort Warden was used to train military officers during the civil war. The park is filled with rich history, and you can even explore the buildings and forts. To go along with Fort Warden, you can visit the nearby museums to further learn more about the history and the soldiers that once inhabited the coastal location. The beaches that line Fort Warden may be cold, but there are many treasures along the beach such as old sea glass and beautiful rocks. You should definitely think about visiting at least one of these locations soon!
