Meghan Laakso gives her opinion on the craziness of March Madness.

Every year comes the month of March and along with it comes the basketball phenomenon: March Madness. March Madness is the college basketball tournament where each team tries to prove itself as the national champion. Sixty-eight teams travel the country competing each other and the process is pretty simple- you lose you go home, you win you move on.

Millions of people across America obsess over their favorite team moving on, hoping for unexpected win and then feeling a sudden run of depression with an inevitable loss. To make things even crazier, people create brackets where they predict who will move on and who will go home and then they put money on their guesses!

Now I already do not care about basketball which is probably why I could not care less about its college tournament. Yeah I have seen a couple of games due to having a sister at Gonzaga but I still do not understand the whole hubbub of March Madness.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Oh look! Another game against another team who is scoring hoops in a constant battle of back and forth. No excitement, no cool moves. All it is is dribble dribble shoot. But what makes these games so much more important than a regular league game? So much so that people make brackets and gamble their money away? You can do that for anything. Golf? Yeah. Swim? You could figure it out.

Want to see cool basketball? Check out the Harlem Globetrotters. That is skill, that is excitement, that is entertainment.

Now I have to admit, I love the World Cup. But there is more to the Cup than March Madness. It is a Global competition, not only national. The World Cup is up there with the Olympics in ways of bringing the world together in peaceful ways. What does March Madness do for the world? Nothing! All it does is break our little American hearts when our favorite teams loses and then empties out our wallets when our bracket goes to the dogs.

To emphasize my opinion, I would like to list a few things that I believe are more interesting than the March Madness… madness.

  1. Under-water basket weaving
  2. Drawing on a water bottle
  3. Dumpster Diving
  4. Changing Bedpans
  5. Exterminating a building of rats

So there you have it. I encourage you save your money and your time and stay away from the trap of March Madness.
